Manchester United ace emerges as Barcelona’s most attainable defensive target for January

Barcelona could find an opportunity to strengthen their defence in the uncertainty surrounding Lisandro Martinez’s future at Manchester United.
According to SPORT, the Argentine international has emerged as the most attainable option for the Blaugrana for January, with the Premier League club potentially willing to negotiate his departure before his contract expires in June 2027.
At 28, Martinez offers experience at the highest level, and the possibility of negotiating a reduced transfer fee make the World Cup winner particularly appealing to the Catalans as they search for defensive reinforcements.
Moreover, his relationship with Manchester United’s hierarchy has deteriorated, which could help the club in their pursuit.

After the club’s Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid, the defender questioned whether sufficient investment had been made during the summer transfer window.
The comments attracted considerable criticism in England, including from former United captain Wayne Rooney.
Martinez eventually issued an apology, but the situation has deteriorated, and as things stand, it appears unlikely that Manchester United would activate the one-year extension on his contract, which currently expires in 2027.
As such, the January window could offer Manchester United an opportunity to secure a transfer fee rather than risk losing him for nothing in the summer.
Defensive injuries make Martinez an attractive option for Deco
Barcelona’s interest in Martinez comes as Deco continues to assess options for the centre-back position.
Injuries affecting Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, Xavi Espart and Jules Kounde have exposed the squad’s vulnerability and strengthened the argument for bringing in another central defender.

Martinez’s contractual circumstances could make him more accessible than other defenders on the club’s shortlist, although any deal would still depend on Manchester United’s demands.
His experience in European football and international pedigree would make him a credible addition to the squad.
Nevertheless, Barcelona must consider whether the transfer fee, wages and overall financial commitment would fit their plans, particularly with several alternatives under consideration.
Moreover, Atletico Madrid have also entered the picture, emerging as rivals to Barcelona in the race to sign the Argentine.
Martinez could be an appealing solution to Barcelona’s defensive problems, particularly if Manchester United’s circumstances bring his price down.
His competitive qualities and experience make him an attractive candidate, but the financial package and his suitability for Hansi Flick’s defensive system must determine whether they pursue him, while also keeping in mind his own injury issues in the recent past.
