Marseille players reject salary cuts amid financial crisis

Despite considerable efforts over the summer to improve the dire financial situation at the club, Olympique de Marseille are still forced to make further cuts in order to keep promises to the DNCG and UEFA.

There was a mass fire sale over the summer, whilst OM also failed to make a single signing. There will be a meeting with the DNCG in December that will inform their decision-making during the January transfer window. There could be a need for further sales, whilst, once again, there may not be the wiggle room to allow the club to dip into the market to buy themselves.

Outside of the transfer window, the club’s leaders are continuing their efforts to make savings. As per a report from Foot Mercato, attempts have been made to decrease the salaries of players already at the club. However, those attempts have been in vain, with players refusing to reduce their current terms.

Earlier in October, Igor Paixao did, however, say that he would be receptive to such a sacrifice. “If I have to reduce my salary to help the club, it is the best thing to do… and then increase it. We just have to have a discussion and decide the best way to do that,” said the winger. Ultimately, however, this has not proved to be an avenue to reduce expenses.
