Rogers, Jacquet, Konsa: who is the Premier League’s best summer signing so far?

Premier League clubs spent a record £3.5billion in the summer and, nine games in, several recruits already look astute business.

According to NY Times, many of the standout arrivals are defenders, and only five Premier League players made the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist, just two of them attackers.

Saliba’s deputy Ezri Konsa is the early frontrunner. The £55million centre-back has six clean sheets in 10 starts and starred in 1-0 wins at Sunderland and Liverpool, matching the steel Mikel Arteta prizes. Whether or not William Saliba regains his place later this month, Konsa’s opening spell may prove title-winning.

Chelsea’s Morgan Rogers has settled after a record £117million switch from Aston Villa, scoring five and assisting one. A solo goal against Manchester United and a sharp understanding with Cole Palmer have brought mature efficiency to a youthful attack.

At Liverpool, 21-year-old Jeremy Jacquet has looked assured alongside Virgil van Dijk since joining from Rennes, defending high and striding out with the ball. He is delivering the consistency that often eluded Ibrahima Konate.

Manchester City’s £116million Elliot Anderson has embraced the task of covering for Rodri, blending ferocious intensity with composure in Enzo Maresca’s build-up. Part of a £350million midfield refresh with Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernandez, he has been the steadiest of the trio so far.

Others impress too. Brighton’s Luka Vuskovic read danger superbly in the 1-0 win at Manchester City, Bournemouth’s Antonio Silva has helped deliver five straight clean sheets, and Brentford’s Mamadou Sangare announced himself with a man-of-the-match display against Spurs. Spurs’ £92.5million Sandro Tonali is now running games after a slow start, Aston Villa’s Zion Suzuki has excelled aside from one error in the 1-1 draw with Fulham, and Johan Manzambi has added end product on Villa’s left.
