Man United latest: Michael Carrick on brink again as team fall apart at Chelsea after Lisandro Martinez red card
Manchester United capitulated at Chelsea after Morgan Rogers’ stunning goal and Lisandro Martinez’s sending off as a third consecutive defeat piled the pressure on Michael Carrick.
United arrived at Stamford Bridge having backed Carrick this week despite a eight-game winless run. Bruno Fernandes was restored as captain and returned to the starting line-up, with the visitors dominating the first half.
But they were unable to take their chances as Fernandes blazed over on the volley and Amad Diallo missed a glaring opportunity to punish a slip from Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana.
Rogers then danced through the United defence to score a wonderful individual goal after half-time, and Carrick’s team collapsed after Martinez conceded a penalty and picked up his second yellow card in the space of two minutes for jumping into Fofana and leading with his forearm while defending a corner.
Cole Palmer converted the penalty to double Chelsea’s lead while the impressive Estevao thought he had added a third for Xabi Alonso’s team, only for it to be disallowed for a narrow offside.
United will now be faced with the same question of whether to continue with Carrick after another dismal defeat, as the club continue to sound out possible replacements that include Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann.
