BALLON D'OR POWER RANKINGS! Every nominee's chances rated and slated with Kane, Yamal and Mbappe leading the 30 contenders

It's football's most prestigious and divisive award. And now we're closer to finding out the recipient of the 2026 men's Ballon d'Or.

On Monday, France Football announced the 30 nominees ahead of the ceremony in London on October 26. Stars from the Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga and beyond were named on the shortlist, kickstarting the debate over who should go home with the gong.

The voting process asks those involved to consider three pieces of criteria. Firslty, individual performances, decisive and impressive character. Secondly, team performances and achievements. And thirdly, class and fair play. Voting should be based on performances between August 3, 2025 and July 19 of this year.

With that in mind, Mirror Football presents its power rankings for the 2026 men's Ballon d'Or.

It's quite the acheivement to be nominated without having played in a European competition for your club, won a trophy or gone far at an international tournament. But it speaks volumes that Bruno Fernandes has made this list.

Nine goals and a record-breaking 21 assists in the Premier League last season fired Manchester United back into the Champions League, and he's swept up awards ever since, including winning the PFA Player of the Year. Remarkable, although still some way off wining the Ballon d'Or.

Despite playing in nearly twice as many competitions, Marquinhos only made one more appearance that Fernandes at club level last season. That's because PSG prioritised their captain for the Champions League which they successfully defended after beating Arsenal on penalties, adding to another Ligue 1 title win.

But perhaps Marquinhos' finest moment came after the final whistle in Budapest. The 32-year-old went over to console Brazilian compatriot Gabriel Magalhaes after the Arsenal defender missed the decisive penalty. Classy.

It was another season to forget for Real Madrid, as they went trophy-less for the second year running and changed managers once again. Jude Bellingham, though, was often there to pull them out of trouble and contributed to 15 goals in all competitions.

But it's his talismanic performances for England at the World Cup that stand out. Driving the Three Lions on during the knockout stages, he made a mockery of anyone questioning his role as a starter under Thomas Tuchel with consistently fabulous displays.

While PSG's attackers often garner most the praise, it's their world-class midfield which gives them the platform to be so prolific. Joao Neves is now a two-time Ballon d'Or nominee and deservedly so.

The Portugal international was a genuine contender heading into the World Cup, but his country's underwhelming showing left a lot to be desired. Still, he's integral to the best club side in the world and can't be dismissed.

Sticking with PSG and Portugal, Vitinha came third in last year's Ballon d'Or but would do well to break into the top 10 this time around. Of course, the midfielder was a driving force behind his club's success and enjoyed a career-best tally for goals and assists.

There's little to split Vitinha and Neves as players, who have different roles for club and country. But more goal contributions and appearances for the robust former Wolves man gives him the edge.

Becoming somewhat of a villain to non-Arsenal fans over the past 12 months, Gabriel has enjoyed another undeniably brilliant 12 months at both ends of the pitch. His imperious displays at the back were complemented by four goals and five assists, showing his prowess from set pieces.

Unfortunately for him, Brazil were drawn against Norway at the World Cup and Gabriel had to come up against Erling Haaland in the last 16. Haaland beat the 28-year-old in the air to break the deadlock late on and that knocked the stuffing out of both Brazil and Gabriel's slim chances of picking up this award.

It's also hard to split the Arsenal centre-backs. They complement each other perfectly and wouldn't be as good without their trusty partner.

They both played the same amount of games, lifted the Premier Leage title and missed out on the World Cup. But Saliba narrowly pips Gabriel in our rankings considering France's deeper run at the tournament and how his injury in their semi-final against Spain was arguably the watershed moment in Les Blues' campaign - and not for the better.

Undoubtedly the best player in the world in his position, Nuno Mendes had another year dominating the left flank for PSG. With four goals and one assist in the Champions League, his contribution to their second European triumph was paramount.

But like Saliba, his injury in the World Cup against Spain was a turning point for his nation. It's extremely uncommon for a full-back to win one of these awards, but credit must be given when someone who owns their position as much as Mendes.

Although Manchester City didn't win the Premier League or Champions League, it shouldn't be forgotten that they had a successful season by winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. Spearheading that was Erling Haaland, who bagged 38 goals in 52 appearances and picked up the Premier League Golden Boot.

But Haaland's goals for Norway deserve as much as acclaim, with his 16 goals in qualifying firing them to the World Cup. The striker the struck seven times in five games at the tournament to rubber stamp that he can do it for both club and country.

He may not be as lauded as Vitinha or Neves, but Fabian Ruiz won a massive four trophies for club and country during the voting period. The Spaniard got his hands on the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, Ligue 1, the Champions League and World Cup.

Ruiz isn't always a starter for his teams but his contribution can't be overlooked. It's time for him to no longer be the unsung hero of the PSG engine room.

Into the top 10 now and regardless of how you rate Lionel Messi now that he plays in Major League Soccer, he's bound to get votes after a dazzling World Cup with Argentina. Scoring eight goals and providing four assists at the tournament showed that he's far from finished, although he recently retired from international football in the wake of Argentina's defeat in the final.

Messi provided two assists as Inter Miami won MLS Cup for the first time in December, and - not that they all should count for the Ballon d'Or - he's contributed to a whopping 32 goals in 24 games for his club in 2026. Incredible for a 39-year-old.

It's hard to believe but Pau Cubarsi is still only 19. The Barcelona academy graduate has long been one of the first names of the team sheet for Hansi Flick and now has the same standing at international level.

Collecting the Spanish Super Cup, the La Liga title and the World Cup this year, he's already got a trophy cabinet which will be the envy of 99 per cent of footballers. Cubarsi would perhaps get more attention if there wasn't another teenager in Barcelona and Spain's ranks.

It feels like we hear more about what Declan Rice supposedly can't do than rather than all the things he can. But the Arsenal midfielder keeps performing and powering his team to wins week in week out, chipping away at the critics.

Instrumental in Arsenal's Premier League title triumph as well as their runs to the finals of the Carabao Cup and Champions League, his endeavour for England at the World Cup when he evidently wasn't fit also speaks volumes of his character. And after five goals and nine assists last term, don't let anyone tell you he isn't useful going forward.

The reigning champion was the clear favourite going into last year's Ballon d'Or ceremony, but it'd be a shock to see him win it again. Nevertheless, don't let that discredit another fantastic season for Ousmane Dembele.

With 20 goals and 11 assists to his name, the Frenchman proved that he's now one of Europe's most consistent attackers after years of debate over whether he was reliable enough to win the biggest prizes. Dembele did that again with PSG, although fell short with France.

The numbers speak for themselves with Michael Olise. In 52 games, the winger managed 23 goals and 26 assists in a team where he isn't even the star forward - more on him later, though.

Olise's remarkable output earned him the Bundesliga Player of the Year award as Bayern Munich stormed to the title before winning the German Cup. The ex-Crystal Palace man also finished the World Cup with the most assists (seven).

Despite not featuring at the World Cup, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia should absolutely be a top contender for the Ballon d'Or. Two-footed, tenacious and a scorer of crucial goals, there are few players better to watch than the Georgian.

Kvaratskhelia scored in every knockout round of the Champions League barring the final, including a sensational 28-minute appearance against Chelsea which saw him score two goals and create another. A breathtaking player to watch and for full-backs to handle.

It's testament to how important Rodri was to Manchester City that only when he was fully fit did they look like they could challenge Arsenal for the Premier League title. His displays in the spring helped close the gap, powering City to two trophies in the process.

For Spain, he pulled the levers in Luis de la Fuente's well-oiled machine. Rodri won the World Cup Golden Ball after another monstrous performance in the final and his move to Barcelona has made them favourites for the Champions League for many.

Onto the podium places now and it seems that Kylian Mbappe is running his own campaign to win the Ballon d'Or. After scoring 42 goals in 44 games for Real Madrid, the striker netted 10 for France at the World Cup and broke the tournament's all-time goalscoring record.

"I've made history in the most important competition, Mbappe stated at a press conference this week. "Maybe it's a good year for this but people can vote according to what they think."

There's no doubt that Mbappe will be popular with voters, but his lack of a trophy is expected to harm his chances. The same can't be said of our next two, though.

Last year's runner-up, Lamine Yamal may have to settle for the same spot this time around. Spectacular for Barcelona, Yamal scored a career-best 24 goals while providing 17 assists to help Flick's men win a domestic double.

And while the 19-year-old had a quiet World Cup by his standards, he was still ever present for Spain beyond their opening game when he was still recovering from injury. Yamal will have plenty of opportunities to win the Ballon d'Or later in his career, but for now we think he'll have to settle for second.

Record breaker, history maker, Harry Kane is at the peak of his powers. The headline of his season may've been his 61 goals in 51 games for Bayern, but there's far more to Kane's game than numbers.

Whether it be tracking back to make tackles or spraying passes from midfield, England's captain has got so much in his locker. And it feels fitting that with the Ballon d'Or ceremony due to be held in London for its 70th anniversary, Kane should be there one holding at the end of the night.
