Carragher leaves Richards in stitches with bankruptcy joke on live TV

Jamie Carragher was able to make fun of his own financial problems live on air - which had Micah Richards laughing as they dissected the night's Champions League talking points.

Carragher was back fulfilling his usual role with CBS, where he covers Europe's biggest club competition. He's also a regular on Sky Sports having forged an impressive punditry career for himself since retiring.

However the ex-Liverpool defender has found himself in hot water with the tax man and it was recently revealed that he faces being declared bankrupt over an unpaid tax bill, thought to be in the region of £700,000 and £800,000.

Carragher made reference to his personal situation when discussing Barcelona. The La Liga champions made the last eight of the Champions League last season but haven't lifted the trophy since 2015 - and Carragher wants to see them back after a period of financial difficulty.

He said on CBS: "I think it's about time we saw Barcelona back in terms of competing where they should be, one of the best teams in the world, one of the biggest teams in the world. They've had their financial problems haven't they?"

After a slight pause he then goes: "Haven't we all.." which promoted laughter from Richards and a smile from host Kate Abdo.

A case has been filed against James Lee Duncan Carragher, reports the BBC, and a spokesperson for the former footballer said: "This is a private tax matter that should have been resolved sooner, and the appropriate steps are being taken today to settle it. It is understood that the matter will not proceed any further and will be resolved imminently."

Last September, it was revealed that up to 200 footballers may have lost tens of millions of pounds, with some losing their homes and being made bankrupt.

Carragher went on to say that, if it isn't Liverpool, he would love to see Barcelona claim Europe's top honour. They begin their campaign at home to Feyenoord on Wednesday evening ahead of playing two English sides in Aston Villa and Manchester City later in the competition.
