Ex-Liverpool star Glenn Hysen, 66, opens up after revealing he has Parkinson's disease

Former Liverpool centre-back Glenn Hysen has revealed that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Hysen, 66, played at Anfield between 1989 and 1992.

The Swede made 72 appearances for Liverpool, winning the First Division title in 1990. Hysen also won two UEFA Cups and five domestic trophies with Swedish giants Goteborg, where he's considered a legend.

In an interview with Hant, the 68-time Sweden international and ex-captain confirmed that he'd been diagnosed with a mild form of Parkinson's. Thankfully, Hysen says that he is not expected to deteriorate provided that he continues taking medication.

"I take medication three to four times a day with tablets," Hysen explained. "It's not dangerous, but you have to treat it."

The 66-year-old also seems to be in good spirits. "I'm not the kind of person who digs deep into things," he continued. "I have no problem with it, it's not a big deal. I could probably work in a bar now and shake a drink."

Hysen's symptoms flare up when he gets nervous, particularly in crowded areas where there are lots of people. "There are certain situations where you get a little nervous," he added. "If there are a lot of people around, I shake a little, but otherwise it's calm."

Liverpool marked the penultimate club in Hysen's decorated career. He made his professional debut for Goteborg in 1979 before joining Dutch heavyweights PSV Eindhoven four years later.

Hysen returned to Goteborg after a couple of seasons with PSV, continuing to have success with the club. Liverpool signed him after a spell with Serie A side Fiorentina, although he almost ended up at Manchester United.

United had invited Hysen over to England for a tour of Old Trafford and a fancy lunch, and it was expected that he would join the Red Devils in a £300,000 transfer move. Then-United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and chairman Martin Edwards personally flew out to Italy to seal the deal, only for his agent to tell them that he'd signed for Liverpool instead.

Hysen made his debut for Liverpool in the 1989 Charity Shield, as Kenny Dalglish's men beat Arsenal 1-0 thanks to a first-half goal from Peter Beardsley. Hysen quickly established a partnership with Alan Hansen, forming the foundation of their First Division title win that season.

His Liverpool career came to an end under Graeme Souness, who sanctioned a free transfer to Swedish club GAIS. Hysen spent three years there before retiring in 1994.
