Ferran Torres, on the slogan on the cap that Donald Trump liked: “It had nothing to do with politics”

The Barcelona player spoke about the controversy surrounding the "Make Spain Great Again" message during the World Cup celebration

Ferran Torres stated this Monday that the cap with the slogan "Make Spain Great Again" that he wore during the celebrations of Spain's title at the 2026 World Cup had no political connotation whatsoever and was solely a reflection of his desire to see the national team become world champions again.

"It was a fun moment because it had nothing to do with politics. Honestly, I don't know anything about politics. It was only so I could see Spain at the top again, winning the World Cup," Torres said in an interview with CNN when asked about the controversy generated by the cap.

The cap, with the slogan "Make Great Spain Again" ("Make Spain great again"), an adaptation of the well-known slogan "Make America Great Again" ("Make the United States great again"), used by U.S. President Donald Trump, was interpreted as a gesture of political support, a reading that the forward downplayed three weeks after the goal that made Spain world champions for the second time.

The controversy surrounding the cap intensified after the White House reacted on the social network X with the message "Everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon", while sharing a video of Torres during the World Cup title celebrations.

During his media tour in the United States, Torres left the door open to a possible change of scenery this summer by stating that he is waiting to "make the right decision" about his future which, in principle, involves renewing with the blaugrana side or signing for PSG.

'"I have a contract (until June 30, 2027) with Barcelona, but in football you never know. I am waiting to make the right decision. I still don't know," Torres said in an interview on NBC's "Today Show"'
