Lewis Hall addresses Man United links, hints at whether a 2027 switch is on the cards

Manchester United have now been handed the clearest hint yet as to whether they can look forward to pulling off a headline Lewis Hall swoop in 2027.

Beyond the midfield, INEOS were also keen on signing a left-back last summer. Finding a capable alternative to Luke Shaw was necessary, since it was obvious the Englishman was never going to start every game as he did last season.

United therefore needed someone who could deputise at left-back without the level dropping whenever Shaw was unavailable. Lewis Hall, on the back of his brilliance at Newcastle United last season, was identified as the best alternative to Shaw.

However, INEOS failed to sign him, moving late in the window, by which point Newcastle had already made several big sales and were unwilling to lose another key player.

Hall ended up staying at St James’ Park, with talk in Manchester suggesting the 20-time English champions were looking to repeat the Carlos Baleba trick: wait a year, then return to close the deal.

Yet while United had a clear plan to bring the left-back to Old Trafford in 2027, the Magpies had plans of their own. They moved to tie Hall down to a new deal with improved terms, giving him no reason to leave and undercutting United’s negotiating power in the process. It worked.

On Friday, it was confirmed that Hall had signed a new deal, and some interesting admissions have since emerged.

Discussing his new deal on NUFC TV, Hall was asked about the persistent links to a summer move to M16.

“I think as a footballer, you’re always going to get speculation. There’s always going to be people talking about you, whether that’s good, whether that’s bad,” he said.

“I guess with what I went through in the summer, it was a positive thing in a sense, because then you know that you’re doing the right things if that’s the situation you’re in.”

He then went on to hint that it is unlikely he will leave Newcastle next summer, adding:

“I just focus on every day as it comes. For however long I am a Newcastle player, for me preferably it would be as long as possible really, with obviously my family connections and everything like that, but whenever I’m wearing the black and white stripes, I’ll always be giving my best in training, in games and everything.

“Like I said, hopefully that can be for a very long time. I truly do love playing here and love playing for this football club.”

With all that said, if United still want Hall, it will take some convincing on his part and a crazy bid from M16.

Alternative identified

United, though, are unlikely to press on with this transfer given how tricky it has proven.

There is talk of the Red Devils turning to Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert to bolster their left-back options next summer, with the Cherries likely to sanction a deal should a £60 million offer arrive. That is one to watch.
