Man Utd’s two weakest links exposed as Bruno scolds his teammate who had a stinker

Manchester United’s failure to bolster their full-back department has returned to haunt them, as Patrick Dorgu put up a listless display in the Derby.

The Red Devils started the game on a positive note, and the circumstances played in their favour when referee Michael Oliver sent off Manchester City winger Phil Foden in the 23rd minute.

The England international reacted to a challenge and a kick from Bruno Fernandes by kicking upwards, so he was given his marching orders for what was deemed to be violent conduct.

But despite their numerical advantage, Michael Carrick’s men came out empty-handed.

Man Utd came extremely close to scoring, with Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo both hitting the post on each side of the interval.

However, Enzo Maresca’s team grew in confidence as the game wore on, and they eventually managed to score a highly controversial goal through Erling Haaland. The linesman raised his flag for offside, but VAR overturned the call, deciding that the goal was legitimate, even though Enzo Fernandez was in a clear offside position.

While the Man City midfielder didn’t touch the ball, his movement certainly distracted both Lisandro Martinez and Senne Lammens.

In any case, the Cityzens’ winner stemmed from Dorgu’s poor attempt to clear the ball with his head, as his accidently gave possession away in a dangerous area.

The Dane started at left-back in Luke Shaw’s absence, but produced a sub-par performance at both ends of the pitch.

The Sun’s Man Utd correspondent Samuel Luckhurst revealed that the 21-year-old was on the receiving end of an earful from his captain.

“This has been abysmal game management from MUFC,” posted the journalist on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

“City have looked likelier in the final third, despite being a player light, and too many United players look totally fazed. Fernandes giving Dorgu a rollocking.”

Luckhurst had also argued that United’s weakness at full-back has been exposed, with Dorgu and Diogo Dalot both struggling to make an impact in the Derby.

“That (Haaland’s goal) comes from Dorgu’s daft *-up. Dalot and he have taken it in turns to give City chances. Further confirmation MUFC will need a right back and a left back next year.

If United fans weren’t already enraged enough with the club’s lacklustre transfer market campaign, this defeat has confirmed what many had already envisioned.

With the injury-prone Shaw left as the club’s only natural left-back option, Carrick was bound to struggle in his absence.

The 45-year-old tactician elected Dorgu as a replacement, and while the latter did well against a fairly modest opponent in Sabah on Thursday, he seemed to be out of his depth against Man City.

Sadly for Man Utd, they won’t be able to rectify their mistakes at least until January.
