Mauricio Pochettino finally agrees huge new contract to STAY as USA head coach until 2030... despite World Cup disaster on home soil

Mauricio Pochettino has officially signed a new contract with the USMNT that will keep him in charge until 2030 – despite their disappointing World Cup campaign.

The 54-year-old's initial contract expired at the end of the tournament, where the USMNT suffered a dispiriting 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Belgium in the round of 16.

The nature of their World Cup exit drew questions over Pochettino's future with the side – until reports last week revealed that talks were ongoing over a new deal.

On Monday, it was officially confirmed that the former Chelsea, Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain head coach had put pen to paper on a new contract with the USMNT.

In a statement, Pochettino said: 'Working together with U.S. Soccer over the past two years, it has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the Men's National Team program even stronger.

'The passion we experienced from the fans throughout the World Cup only strengthened our belief in what is possible here.

'We are excited by the opportunity to bring all our experience and knowledge to even more areas of U.S. Soccer while helping strengthen the pathways for players, coaches and teams across the Federation.

'We want to try to have a lasting impact on the sport in the country that has welcomed us so warmly and for that impact to extend beyond results on the field.'

The Daily Mail understands that Pochettino's appointment has been funded in part by Kenneth C Griffin, Founder and CEO of Citadel and Scott Goodwin, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Diameter.

A statement by US Soccer insisted that Pochettino 'will have the opportunity to test and strengthen the player pool through numerous official competitions'.

The Argentine's new deal means that he will oversee the USA throughout the 2027 Concacaf Nations League, the 2027 Concacaf Gold Cup, the 2029 Concacaf Nations League and the 2029 Concacaf Gold Cup.

He will also lead the USA into the 20230 World Cup – jointly hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain – should they qualify for the competition.

Meanwhile, US Soccer CEO and Secretary General JT Batson said: 'Mauricio and his staff believe in the future of soccer in the United States and our new project allows us to build on progress of the USMNT and the momentum of U.S. Soccer.

'We know we have a lot of work to do to achieve our clear ambitions, including competing to win Men's World Cups and having soccer become the most played sport in every community.

Batson had confirmed last week that active discussions were underway regarding the future of the program's coaching staff.

Meanwhile, despite a disappointing end to their World Cup campaign, Pochettino and the USMNT still made history with their performances earlier on in the competition.

For just the third time in history, the USA won their group outright, before going on to defeat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the round of 32 – before their loss to Belgium.

Pochettino's coaching staff, Jesus Perez, Miguel D'Agostino, Toni Jimenez, Sebastiano Pochettino and Silvia Tuya, are expected to remain with the Argentine.
