McTominay health update as Napoli issue statement following heart surgery

Scott McTominay has undergone successful surgery to correct a minor heart issue, Napoli have confirmed. The former Manchester United star was recently diagnosed with a mild benign arrhythmia, an irregular heart rhythm which is deemed non-serious but required a procedure.

McTominay, 29, went under the knife in Manchester on Tuesday and Napoli say that the surgery was a 'complete success'. The Serie A side added that their midfielder is expected to return to action following the upcoming international break.

"On Tuesday morning, Scott McTominay underwent an ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital," Napoli said in a statement. "The operation was a complete success. McTominay will rest for two weeks and then resume training."

The Scotland international has also played down the seriousness of the issue, saying at a recent awards ceremony: "I'm fine, the procedure was something I'd planned to do with the club for quite a while."

McTominay's procedure forced him to miss Napoli's 3-2 defeat away to Inter Milan last Saturday. He'll be unavailable for a further three Napoli matches, including their Champions League opener at home to Arsenal on Wednesday.

Max Allegri will hope to have McTominay available when his side host Frosinone on October 10 in their first game after the international break. Napoli have lost two of their opening three Serie A fixtures leaving them 12th in the table and six points off the top.

Scotland will also have to manage without McTominay for the start of new boss Sebastien Pocognoli's reign. Following their disappointing World Cup exit, Scotland will look to rebuild across four Nations League matches which take place between September 26 and October 6.

McTominay's long-term future in Naples has also been a talking point this week. Contracted until 2028, there's uncertainty over whether he'll sign a new deal.

He signed for Napoli under Antonio Conte two years ago in a deal worth £25.7million, winning the Italian title in his first season and being named Serie A Player of the Season. Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna addressed the uncertainty surrounding the 29-year-old in an interview with DAZN.

"Scott said he doesn't know if he'll renew at this time," Manna explained. "He has a two-year contract, we want to do it, and he wants to do it, too. It's not always easy to make things coincide, but we're trying."

McTominay was sold by United in the summer of 2024 after spending more than two decades with the Red Devils. He made 255 first-team appearances, winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
