Mikel Arteta demonstrated Arsenal’s mentality going into this season by insisting his side are "attacking another Premier League" title.

At the end of a long and gruelling season last term where the Gunners lost in the Carabao Cup final and the Champions League final, Arteta’s men ended a 22-year wait for a Premier League trophy. It was not easy by any means, taking a monumental effort to finally get over the line with Manchester City breathing down their necks, having finished second three years in a row.

Other sides in the past have been guilty of suffering from second season syndrome after winning the league, lacking the same hunger, drive and passion after achieving their dreams. But Arteta’s Arsenal are the last team you’d expect to suffer such a fate, given his well-known demands for high standards and the characteristics that have defined his team in recent years.

Speaking on the Men in Blazers podcast, the Gunners boss was introduced by host Roger Bennett as "Mikel Arteta - defending Premier League champion."

But, in a show of his elite mentality, the Spaniard immediately corrected the host by saying with a smile: "Attacking! Another Premier League. That’s where we’re going."

His side’s recent display in the Community Shield was a clear indication that those were not mere words. Arsenal arrived at the Principality Stadium with one thing on their minds ahead of the clash with Manchester City last Sunday - to win.

They thoroughly outplayed their title rivals and clinched a dominant 3-0 victory, sending a message out to the rest of the league that they are serious contenders once again this term.

Bennett then asked how "defending champions" sounded to Arteta, to which he replied: "I love it because now we go for more and we want to create something much bigger than that. We won it but now there’s something much bigger we want to achieve as a club."

When quizzed on what comes next, the manager was very clear that Arsenal will fight for all four trophies again this season. He said: "The energy everybody has now is, ‘I want to do it again. I want to go through that emotion.’

"So it’s almost like something that gets installed in your brain. We need to start from day one and realise that this is something that’s going to demand a lot from everybody - but we have the ability to do it.

"[Creating a dynasty] is what we want right now and it is the ambition of everybody at the club from the owners to every staff member to the players."

The club hierarchy have certainly shown that with their ambition in the transfer window this summer. After sealing Piero Hincapie’s permanent transfer, they brought in Illan Meslier as a back-up goalkeeper, signed winger Christos Tzolis for £34m, brought in midfielder Bruno Guimaraes for £75m, and have now agreed a deal worth at least £51m for Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa.
