Newcastle warn fans more players will be sold as Man Utd eye Hall transfer

Newcastle sporting director, Ross Wilson, has conceded that more big-name player sales are likely as the club embrace a new player trading model to ensure they remain within financial rules.

The Magpies lost Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes during the summer transfer window, while Alexander Isak was sold for a British record transfer fee 12 months ago after agitating for a move to Liverpool.

Around £230million was raised from player sales in the transfer window with Newcastle bringing in an influx of young talent, including the deadline day capture of Matias Fernandez-Pardo.

But while Newcastle may be under no immediate financial pressure, Wilson has warned supporters that further player trading is inevitable in order to comply with both the Premier League and UEFA's financial rules moving forward.

“These are the conversations that every club’s got to have,” Wilson told The Telegraph.

“We’re working on a regulatory framework that isn’t for Newcastle United. It’s for everyone. So this isn’t a choice. This is what we’ve got to do. And if you don’t do it, then just keep the squad you’ve got forever more. They’ll grow old and achieve less and leave for nothing.

“If you want to be a successful club in the Premier League you have to trade players and if you don’t the chances are you won’t be a successful club.

“Particularly where the revenues of this club are in a phase where, [chief executive] David [Hopkinson] and his team are making those revenues really, really grow. But without that, if you don’t trade players, you are going to get stuck.”

Lewis Hall was another high-profile player who was the subject of transfer interest throughout the summer with Manchester United courting the 22-year-old left-back.

Newcastle are attempting to lock Hall down to a new contract with the player still at St James' Park after the window, with the same outlet reporting that the former Chelsea man is 'expected' to sign fresh terms.

However, that has seemingly not deterred United from plotting to sign Hall in the future, with reports suggesting that the defender will remain a key transfer target.
