Our writers’ predictions for the 2026/27 Premier League season

Premier League football returns this weekend and our writers are back on hand with their predictions for the 2026/27 season.

Title winners

Harry Diamond: Arsenal. The champions are built on the best defence and far more settled than would-be contenders in a summer of change across the Premier League.

Ste McGovern: Arsenal. The Gunners are not a lock to retain the Premier League, but it’s certainly difficult to pick out a team that could usurp them.

Ayoob Rahman: Arsenal. Back-to-back league titles demand relentless consistency and mental toughness. Boasting the division’s meanest defence and immense squad depth, Mikel Arteta’s side remain the benchmark.

Mohon Chanda: Manchester City. Arsenal remain a real contender and City just lost Rodri, but Manchester City had a pretty bad season last time out and still almost clinched the title. I don’t think any other team has that consistency they do.

Top four

Harry Diamond: Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea.

Ste McGovern: Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool.

Ayoob Rahman: Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United

Mohon Chanda: Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea.

Relegated

Harry Diamond: Coventry City, Ipswich, Hull City. After Leeds and Sunderland bucked the trend of promoted sides going straight back down, I think we’ll, sadly, revert back to a gap again. I hope I’m wrong on this one!

Ste McGovern: Sunderland, Coventry City, Hull City. The Black Cats could regress badly after the highs of last season.

Ayoob Rahman: Ipswich Town, Fulham, Hull City.

Mohon Chanda: Ipswich Town, Hull City, Coventry.

Top scorer

Harry Diamond: Erling Haaland. Barring injury, a record-equalling fourth Golden Boot is inevitable.

Ste McGovern: Erling Haaland. Simple as.

Ayoob Rahman: Joao Pedro. Pedro showed off his clinical finishing throughout pre-season with sharp penalty-box movement. At the same time, Erling Haaland may struggle as City adjust to losing key playmakers such as Rodri and Bernardo Silva.

Mohon Chanda: Once again, it’s Erling Haaland. 35 goals minimum.

Fantasy Premier League – Building an FPL team without Haaland for 2026/27

Player of the Season

Harry Diamond: Bruno Guimaraes (Arsenal). It takes a top talent to go into a title-winning team and make them better, but I think Guimaraes can do that. He has a style that wins admirers.

Ste McGovern: Declan Rice (Arsenal). If the midfielder stays fully fit for the entire season, he will be integral to their title defence.

Ayoob Rahman: Martin Ødegaard (Arsenal). Ødegaard showed glimpses of his finest form during the World Cup and pre-season. A fully fit captain will prove decisive as Mikel Arteta demands even more from him.

Mohon Chanda: Erling Haaland. I see him as the top scorer and not by a small margin. Anybody who scores that much in a single season is a big contender to be the player of the season

Best Signing

Harry Diamond: This is perhaps contradictory after picking a new signing as Player of the Season, but let’s go for value here. Leeds are a real aerial threat and have added a super set-piece taker in Harry Wilson, for free. The Welsh winger should serve up plenty of assists.

Ste McGovern: Hayden Hackney to Everton. The Toffees have landed themselves an exciting prospect for a really nice price.

Ayoob Rahman: Christos Tzolis (Arsenal). The Greek winger immediately proved his £34 million value with two sharp assists in the Community Shield. His direct running and crossing gives Mikel Arteta an explosive new attacking option.

Mohon Chanda: Ronald Araujo will make Liverpool a good defensive team once again.

One to watch

Harry Diamond: Brian Madjo (Aston Villa). The 17-year-old bulldozed Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup and could have had a hat-trick. He looks built for the Premier League.

Ste McGovern: Cesar Palacios (Fulham). The former Real Madrid midfielder looks like a tidy player with composure on the ball and great vision. He could turn out to be a bargain.

Ayoob Rahman: Jeremy Monga (Manchester City). Manchester City secured the electrifying 17-year-old winger following his historic breakthrough in the Championship. His blistering pace and fearlessness in one-on-one duels make him an exciting talent.

Mohon Chanda: Gonzalo Garcia. He is going to bang in the goals for Fulham.

First manager sacked

Harry Diamond: Sergej Jakirović. Hull owner Acun Ilicali has taken to social media this summer to update supporters on the club’s transfer activity. It’s certainly unorthodox, so maybe we should expect a trigger-happy response to a slow start.

Ste McGovern: Oliver Glasner. The difficult Austrian and histrionic Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis are bound to butt heads sooner or later, and I’m betting on sooner.

Ayoob Rahman: Álvaro Arbeloa (Fulham). Stepping from Real Madrid straight into a Premier League relegation scrap carries massive risk. If Fulham start poorly, mounting board pressure could trigger a quick dismissal at Craven Cottage.

Mohon Chanda: Sergej Jakirović. The fixtures are tough and I don’t see them winning many points early in the season.
