Police have confirmed they have opened a routine investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter following the death of Spanish footballer Jesus de Miguel. The Tenerife striker, 30, died in hospital on Tuesday after he went into cardiac arrest following a serious collision during a match in the Spanish second division.

De Miguel was on the receiving end of a reckless foul from Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono, who shown a red card after rushing towards the centre circle and colliding with De Miguel. The incident led to the game being abandoned with the scores at 2-2 in stoppage time.

An investigation into De Miguel's death has now been opened by police in the Canary Islands. Under Spanish law, any death deemed to be caused unnaturally automatically triggers a judicial inquiry.

Owono, 25, reportedly broke down after hearing the news of De Miguel's death. The Equatorial Guinea international has also deleted his Instagram account, having allegedly been flooded with messages of abuse.
