What Tom Brady is actually supposed to be doing at Birmingham City

The NFL icon is part of a high-profile board at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park

Birmingham City's ownership structure in recent years has been the subject of high publicity, especially with a figure such as Tom Brady on the board at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park.

Birmingham have resided outside the Premier League since May 2011 and have undergone many false dawns since then in terms of owners and managers who have stepped foot in B9, but since Knighthead Capital Management's initial takeover in July 2023, the mood has been mostly positive amongst supporters.

Whilst Tom Wagner had been the frontman when it came to developments at St. Andrew's before unfortunately suffering a stroke earlier in 2026, there has still been a strong focus on what his fellow board member and seven-time NFL Super Bowl champion, Brady, does in his role of Advisory Board Chairman.

The 49-year-old has, of course, been spotted at a handful of fixtures during a period in which the Second City outfit were relegated from the Championship to League One for the first time since 1995, before responding to their setback in remarkable fashion under Chris Davies by breaking the EFL's points record, and now the aim is to return to the Premier League as soon as possible.

Knighthead's initial takeover came after a tumultuous period in Birmingham's history under two controversial Far-Eastern ownership groups, the latter of which were Birmingham Sports Holdings Limited.

Although St. Andrew's was only half-open during this period through much-needed renovation work taking place on the Kop and Tilton Road stands, Wagner took in the final match of the 2022/23 season against Sheffield United, and weeks after he took control of the club, Brady's involvement was confirmed, as well as his aforementioned role being announced.

"Birmingham City is an iconic club with so much history and passion and to be part of the Blues is a real honor for me," the five-time NFL MVP said at the time.

"BCFC is built on teamwork and determination and I'm excited to work alongside the board, management and players to make our Second City club second to none. I've been part of some amazing teams in my day, and I'm looking forward to applying my perspective to create that same success here in Birmingham."

Despite the aforementioned title suggesting that Brady is a key figure when it comes to making boardroom decisions in B9 more often than not, it was explained that the former New England Patriots star would look to pass on his expertise to the playing squad, which has undergone mass turnover since then.

As well as also looking to enhance the club's marketing department, it was revealed that Brady would be working with Birmingham's sports science department to work on elements such as nutrition, wellness and recovery.

It has also been well-documented that Brady's close friend, Alex Guerrero, has passed on advice to the West Midlands side's medical staff, which led to a remarkable claim in 2026 when speaking to the likes of Gary Neville, Ian Wright and Roy Keane on The Overlap.

"He's running the health and wellness departments for Las Vegas Raiders and we have the lowest injury rates. At Birmingham City in the Championship, in the last two years we've had the lowest injury rates of any team," said Brady.

Unsurprisingly, having a figure as prestigious as Brady involved in the club's day-to-day running has given Blues plenty of attention.

This has been evident in many ways, but none more so than a 2025 Amazon Prime documentary series titled 'Built in Birmingham: Brady & the Blues'.

The series charted the club's relegation campaign under six permanent or temporary managers, as well as their record-breaking response under Davies, and was narrated in a way in which sports fans in the United States could understand more about the English football pyramid, as well as the culture which surrounds the country's major sport in comparison as to how it does Stateside.

As a result of their own high-profile investment, the series also provided an insight into the newfound 'rivalry' between Birmingham and Wrexham, with a 3-1 win for Blues in September 2024 seeing the likes of Sir David Beckham in attendance alongside Brady.

As well as his current involvement on and off the pitch, Brady's influence could have a long-lasting effect on sport in Birmingham.

Blues, of course, have called St. Andrew's home since the year 1906, but after plans were initially mooted in 2024, designs for the Powerhouse stadium were unveiled in November 2025, with Brady and the likes of Jude Bellingham present in a fascinating teaser.

The stadium will be the centrepiece of a Sports Quarter complex, which will also house the club's training facilities, whilst it is also hoped that NFL matches will be brought to this part of the country, with previous matches held at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
