Who is Daniella Guzman? The TV host who was suspended amid investigation into VIP tickets for World Cup and Bruno Mars

The Emmy-winning journalist has been removed from air while KPRC examines potential conflict of interest

A family trip to the World Cup has turned into a serious professional problem for Daniella Guzman, after records reportedly showed the Houston television anchor received complimentary luxury-suite tickets from an organization connected to the local government.

KPRC announced that Guzman had been suspended while the station investigates whether accepting tickets to a FIFA World Cup match and a Bruno Mars concert created a conflict of interest.

“We want to disclose a matter this morning involving a staff member at KPRC,” the station said in a statement. “The Station is aware of reports alleging that news anchor Daniella Guzman received complimentary tickets to a concert and FIFA World Cup match from the Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation.”

The action followed a report from The Texas Voice based on records obtained from the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation, which manages NRG Park on behalf of the county.

According to the report, Guzman received three tickets to the June 17 World Cup match between Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo. She attended the game with her parents and posted footage from inside a suite on social media.

The records also reportedly showed she received four tickets to a Bruno Mars concert at NRG Stadium in April.

Did complimentary tickets cross an ethical line?

The station hasn't concluded that Guzman violated company policy. Her suspension is in place while KPRC reviews how the tickets were offered, whether they were disclosed and whether accepting them compromised, or appeared to compromise, her journalistic independence.

“We take matters regarding potential conflicts of interest very seriously,” KPRC said. “Ms. Guzman has been suspended pending the result of a company investigation.”

“You have our assurances that this issue will be investigated thoroughly and fairly.”

KPRC general manager Sean McLaughlin emphasized that newsroom ethics apply even when a gift does not directly influence coverage.

“Our station takes journalistic ethics very seriously along with anything that could potentially create even the appearance of a conflict of interest,” McLaughlin told The Texas Voice before the suspension was announced.

KPRC hasn't publicly identified the precise policy under review or disclosed the estimated value of the tickets. Guzman has also not issued a public response.

Her social media post described attending the World Cup with her parents as “a dream come true,” but reportedly didn't explain how the family obtained access to the suite.

Ticket disclosures extend far beyond Guzman

The records placed Guzman among a much larger group of influential recipients.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, all four county commissioners and several state and local officials reportedly received tickets to World Cup matches or other events from the corporation. The list also included political appointees, a labor organization and other prominent figures in the Houston area.

The Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation maintains a suite at NRG Stadium and regularly uses it to host guests. The broader disclosure has therefore raised questions about how publicly connected hospitality is distributed and what those invited are expected to disclose.

Journalists are held to a distinct set of professional standards because even the appearance that access or favors could influence coverage may undermine public trust.

That distinction explains why Guzman, a four-time Emmy-winning journalist who returned to KPRC in 2022, was removed from the air before the investigation reached a conclusion.

The station has provided no timetable for a decision. Until then, the issue remains unresolved and a celebrated World Cup experience is now being examined as a possible breach of the distance expected between a newsroom and the institutions it covers.
