A new era; MLS clubs set spending record in the wake of 2026 World Cup

When the United States hosted the FIFA World Cup in 1994, along with it came the creation of Major League Soccer.

And now, over 30 years later, we have the first signs of what could be another watershed moment for MLS, and football across North America.

The league announced on Wednesday that it had set new records for both incoming and outgoing transfer activity. In total, MLS clubs spent over $370 million on new talent, while generating $218 million in transfer revenue.

This massive transfer spend included the acquisition of several star names, such as Antoine Griezmann, Robert Lewandowski, Breel Embolo and Casemiro. In the process, eight MLS teams made club-record signings.

Additionally, 20 of the players signed by MLS clubs this summer took part in the 2026 World Cup, including Scotland's Angus Gunn, Canada's Luc de Fougerolles and DR Congo's Cédric Bakambu.

On the other hand, 19-year-old Real Salt Lake sensation Zavier Gozo generated the second-largest summer transfer fee for a MLS Homegrown Player when he joined Crystal Palace for $15 million.

Crucially for MLS' long-term growth, this marks the second-consecutive year in which the league surpassed $200 million in total transfer revenue.

So, while MLS clubs certainly took advantage of the summer's World Cup momentum, it's safe to say there is now a wealth of talent, young and old, throughout the league.
